Eastern Tourism Fair begins

Three day - first Eastern Regional Tourism Fair 2012 began on March 15 in Biratnagar.

Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Lokendra Bist Magar inaugurated the three-day regional tourism fair amidst a special function organized at the Birendra Convention Hall.

The tourism mart has aimed to identify and promote the tourism destinations in the eastern region, create tourism awareness among the general public and link tourism to livelihoods of the public.

The fair will be a platform for publicizing the tour packages developed for the domestic tourists for various destinations of the eastern region.

A live demonstration of handicraft production, cultural dances, documentary show depicting various tourism destinations, among others, are the main attractions of the fair.

Tourism related associations, companies, committees and trusts have separate stalls at the fair.

Tourism fair is an initiative taken to develop Biratnagar as a regional tourism hub of the eastern development region.

Subash Nirola, Senior Director at the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), said that the board has been working on a plan to develop tourism in the eastern region as per the concept of 17 Tourism Hubs introduced by the government.

The government has proposed for the development of Birat Region, a tourism zone, making Biratnagar a center.

To promote the tourism in the Birat Region, we are planning to open a tourism information center, declaring the eastern development region as an organic production region and develop regional air route to make the eastern mountains accessible, said Bhabish Shrestha, President of the Birat Region Tourism Development Committee.

Biratnagar is regarded as an important destination from the perspective of health tourism. Hundreds of patients from India visit Biratnagar daily to cure their health problem.

Increased investments in the health sector targeting the patients of India and Bangladesh have shown prospects of health tourism in the city, Nirola said.

Because of a cheap healthcare facilities related to neuro-surgery and eye treatment, a lot of Indians visit the city daily.

Tourism Road show in Russia and Czech concludes

Nepal Tourism Board successfully concluded three-city Road Show in Prague- Czech Republic, Moscow and St. Petersburg - Russia on 13th, 14th and 16th March 2012 respectively with the aim of increasing awareness and educating the Czech and Russian Travelers on Nepals tourism products and offerings. The programs in all three cities were designed on NTB destination presentation and B2B (Business-to-Business) sessions. The B2B session of the program was dedicated to trade workshop where Nepalese Tour Operators and Czech and Russian Travel Trade had one-to-one interaction and business dealings. The travel trade from all the cities had extensive deliberation with the Nepalese tour operators which helped towards enhancing the existing business, forging new alliances and expanding Nepals presence in the new and emerging European Markets. A presentation on destination Nepal was made for both the press and trade on the occasion by Mr. Aditya Baral, Director of Nepal Tourism Board.

Russian travelers being the world's top spenders and with an increase of Russian tourists in Nepal by 109% in 2010 compared to 2009 and 33% increase in 2011 compared to 2010 holds an immense potential for Nepalese travel tourism industry. Likewise, with an ever increasing travel trend of Czech people and an increase of Czech tourists in Nepal by 116% in the year 2010 compared to 2009 and increase by 40% in 2011 compared to the year 2010, Czech market also holds a promising prospect for Nepalese travel tourism industry.

Commemorating NTY 2011 and this year as Visit Lumbini Year 2012, this road show further focused on strengthening the position of Lumbini as the centre of global peace and helped position Lumbini among the Czech and Russian travellers as the centre of Buddhist pilgrimage.

Nepal Road Show was attended by a total of around 50 outbound agents and some media in Prague; about 100 Russian travel trade companies and some media in Moscow and 60 Russian travel trade companies and media in St. Petersburg. The Nepalese delegation comprising of Nepalese travel trade companies namely: ACE the Himalaya, Nepal & Beyond Travel & Tours, Thamsherku Trekking and My Nepal Adventure, was led by Mr. Aditya Baral, Director and Mr. Diwakar Bikram Rana, Sr. Manager, NTB.

Nepal continues to draw attention and command appeal to the European travelers. An inventory of natural, cultural, recreational and soft adventure products Nepal offers are the major factors which contribute to Nepals popularity as a favorite holiday destination amongst European travelers.

Bay speaker discusses Nepal travels

Bay College welcomed college professor, speaker and traveler Carole Elchert Thursday for a presentation at the Joseph Heirman University Center on the country of Nepal, its developing economy, and dependence on its booming tourism industry.

Elchert, a communication professor at the University of Findlay in Ohio, has traveled to Nepal 17 times, and discussed the country's culture and its reliance on tourism as part of her presentation.

When discussing modern tourism in a small country like Nepal, located in south Asia, Elchert said we must ask questions, using a pottery example to make her point.

"We have to ask ourself, 'Who's the potter?' and then we have to ask ourselves, 'Who's the pot?'" she said. "Then we have to ask ourselves, "In whose hands is the country developing?'"

She said the answers to the questions are very important when discussing and contemplating Nepal's future.

Nepal, which has eight of the highest mountain peaks in the world and a mountain ecosystem covering 80 percent of its landmass, did not originally draw in tourists for the Himalayas or Mt. Everest, which is commonly assumed.

Nepal's attraction in its first decade of significant tourism, between 1963 and 1973, was purely for pleasure, she said.

"They were souvenir and specialty tourists who never left the Katmandu Valley," explained Elchert.

Those who go to Nepal today are classified as adventure tourists, since mountain tourism is a big business for small countries like Nepal, where people spend significant amounts of money.

One reason why people like to be involved in adventure tourism include their desire for exotic places, she said.

Other reasons for adventure tourism include a desire to suffer, as people spend outrageous amounts of money to be at a higher altitude where they might get sick, as well as a desire for the authentic.

"We love to go those places that have somehow managed to survive in the modern world as they always were," said Elchert.

This brings forth a question of how and whether places like Nepal should change their nature to satisfy the needs of tourists.

The Himalayas stretch 10 percent of the distance around the globe and are a major force in creating weather, according to Elchert.

The country, which is about the size of Arkansas, is land-locked, rectangular-shaped, and is 150 miles long from north to south, and 500 miles from east and west.

Agriculture employs 75 percent of the population, and the country has two main religions - Hinduism and Buddhism, which she said share a mutual respect for one another and have shared rituals.

It has a population of 30 million people and is distinct in how it sits at the crossroads between the past and the future.

"Tourism in Nepal is not just about the mountains that surround a country the size of Arkansas," said Elchert. "It is a country that follows ancient rhythms in a modern world."

She noted the country is very diverse with many ethnic groups who speak more than 42 different languages.

"You can find the people are rising from the land to modernity," explained Elchert. "So it's a wonderful convergence point where different times and different worlds are meeting. Those are interesting places."

Elchert's presentation, which included photos she captured from her experiences in the developing nation, was sponsored by the Michigan Global Awareness Consortium - a group of six community colleges "dedicated to bringing global issues, international opportunities, and information to their campuses."
