Nepal promoted in Sweden

The Embassy of Nepal in Copenhagen, Denmark organized a promotional programme entitled "A Presentation on Tourism, Trade and Investment Opportunities in Nepul" at Restaurang Himalaya in Goteborg, the second largest city in Sweden on 06 July 2013. A team of the Embassy officials comprising of Mr. Ram Kaji Khadka, Counsellor/Deputy Chief of Mission,Mr. Prakash Adhikari, Second Secretary and Mr. Uttam Prasad Neupane, Attache conducted the programme. Mr. Prakash Adhikari, Second Secretary welcomed the guests in the programme and highlighted the objective of the event.

Following the welcome remarks, the Counsellor made the presentation, where he shed light on major tourist affractions in Nepal, new and niche tourism products such as rural tourism, home stay, send home a friend, MICE tourism, meditation,honeymoon and major tourism clusters like nature, culture and adventure.

lt was also emphasized during the presentation that the brand Nepal segment such as weekend breaks,amazing adventure and life time experience could benefit tourists visiting Nepal rejuvenate their body, mind and soul with the unprecedented opportunity to experience the perfect blending of nature, culture and society with the service provided by friendly and ever smiling people.

Nepal's tourism brand-'Naturally Nepal, Once is not Enouglr'was thus repeatedly emphasized in the presentation.The impact of Visit Nepal Year 2011, subsequent upward curve of the tourist arrivals by air,tourism policy of Nepal and its vision to host 20 million tourists annually by 2020 and tourism campaign year 2013-2020 to rcalize the vision through the creation of destination demand,bringing Nepalese travel trade and international travel trade and consumers together,establishment of backward and forward linkages and achievement of higher spending, longer stays and year-round arrivals were also highlighted during the presentation.

A montage that won Grad Prix Award in Czech Republic in 2006 was also displayed following the presentation.Given the insignificant presence of businessmen, trade and investment opportunities in Nepal were only touched upon but not discussed in detail during the presentation.

There was a significant presence of travel agents, Nepal enthusiasts, friends of Nepal and potential tourists fiom Goteborg and its vicinity and Nepalese expats and students in the programme. All the guests were requested to visit Nepal once and encourage their friends, relatives and kins to visit Nepal at the end of the presentation that was followed by a dinner. Tourism related materials including brochures, CDs and booklets provided by Nepal Tourism Board were also distributed among the guests.

The programme organized as part of economic diplomacy is expected to have positive impression among the guests encouraging them to place Nepal at the top of their travel destination in their future travel plan.

Power summit will energize hydropower sector: IPPAN

Organizers of the ´Power Summit 2013´ have claimed that the two-day event would help create favorable environment for hydropower sector.

Speaking at a press meet on August 7, 2013, Subarna Das Shrestha, President of Independent Power Producers´ Association Nepal (IPPAN), said the summit would energize the hydropower sector and help create environment conducive for the ongoing 70 projects, with installed capacity of 1,978 MW, that are under different phases of construction.

“From the experience of three editions of Power Summit, we have come to know that events like this can create enthusiasm and give momentum to the energy sector,” added Shrestha.

IPPAN is organizing the 4th Power Summit on August 26 and 27. It has already sent invitations to investors, suppliers of equipment and machinery for hydropower projects, consultants, and banks and financial institutes from India, China, Korea, Russia, Japan, Norway, Check Republic, Canada and the United States of America. Some 500 participants are taking part in the event including Nepali delegates.

The event is being organized after a hiatus of four years. IPPAN had organized the first three summits in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

“Despite unfavorable investment climate in the country, about 337 hydropower projects with total installed capacity of 9,021 MW are in different stages of project development. This became possible because of the power summits that we organized in the past,” said Shrestha. “Various speakers at those summits had drawn the attraction of the government toward hydropower development.”

IPPAN is organizing the ´4th Power Summit´ with theme of ´Hastening the Pace of Hydropower Development´ together with PTC India Limited and Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA).

Room bookings at star hotels go up

Room booking at star hotels and resorts in Kathmandu for this month and the upcoming months look promising compared to the same period of last year.

Hoteliers say they have seen 10 to 15 percent increment for October-December compared to last year. Almost all the start hotels have reported growth in booking for the period. However, booking for September has gone down.

“The booking for September has gone down as the number of trekkers visiting Nepal is decreasing,” Bharat Joshi, resident manager at Hotel Yak and Yeti, said. He attributed the decline in the number of trekkers to recession in France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Booking figures of Hotel Yak and Yeti as at August 6 show the hotel has received 46 percent booking for August, 45 percent for September, 87 percent for October, 88 percent for November and 67 percent for December.

Hoteliers attribute the growth in booking to growing number of Chinese tourists, increased flow of tourists to Kailash Mansarovar area of Tibet, and growth in occupancy from MICE (Meeting Incentives Conference and Exhibition) segment.

Bharat Devkota, sales and marketing manager at Shaker Hotel, said hotels have received good bookings compared to last year because tourists feel political situation here has become stable after election date was finalized.

The hotel has received 65 percent booking for August and 75 percent, 90 percent, 90 percent and 50 percent, respectively, for September, October, November and December.

According to the hoteliers, most of the bookings have been made by individual clients. “Booking from corporate clients is not satisfactory. Likewise, booking from MICE segment, except India, is also down,” Joshi said, adding that most of the international conferences have been postponed to December-end or January due to election.

Though hotels in Kathmandu have reported rise in booking, Pokhara hotels say bookings are down compared to last year. Rajkumar KC, executive manager of Hotel Barahi, hotels in Pokhara have received less bookings compared to last year.

“We have received fewer bookings not because tourist arrivals are down. It is because six new hotels and resorts have opened in Pokhara,” said KC.

Hotel Barahi has received 60 percent booking for August, 44 percent for September, 95 percent each for October and November, and 80 percent for December.    (News Courtesy: The Republica)

TAAN Eco-Challenge on Aug 17

With a view to attracting tourists in the off season, Trekking Agencies´ Association of Nepal (TAAN) is organizing TAAN International Eco-Challenge 2013 on August 17.

The Eco-Challenge is a team event in which teams comprising four members each will compete in three different disciplines of sports -- running, cycling and rafting, the organizer TAAN announced at a press conference in the capital on Monday.

"We are organizing the event with a view to attracting tourists in the off season as well. The period from October to November and from March to May are the only tourist seasons in Nepal and we hope such events will help attract tourists in the off season as well," said Mohan Lamsal, the general secretary of TAAN. According to TAAN President Mahendra Singh Thapa, the event is being organized with the slogan "Nepal for All Season".

All four members of each team will start the Eco-Challenge with a 6.5-km race from Bhutkhel ground, Tokha to Pani Muhan, Budhanilkantha. A team can compete in cycling once all the team members reach the finishing point. Similarly, all the team members have to complete the 14.5-km cycling race from Nagarjun-Shivapuri National Park to Sundarijal before they can take part in rafting, the third and final segment of the event. The 7.5-km rafting race will start from the Bagmati River at Sundarijal and finish at Gokarna.

Each team will get one guide for rafting and the team that finishes first in the last segment -- rafting -- will be declared the winner. "The main objective behind starting every stage after the arrival of all team members is to develop team spirit," said Saroj Neupane, the coordinator of sports, festival and ceremony department at TAAN.

The registration fee for Nepali teams is Rs 2,500 and $ 100 for foreign teams. The top three teams will bag Rs 100,000, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively. The organizers have expected at least 10 teams to participate in the event. The expected cost of the event is about Rs 1 million.

Workshop on handicraft product design concludes

A workshop on industrial design organized with the aim of strengthening and diversifying Nepal´s handicraft products concluded here on August 5, 2013.

Some 26 students of Kathmandu University´s Center for Art and Design and working professionals participated in the workshop to improve their handicraft product design skills, according to a press release.

The workshop concluded with creative culmination of the work of students, who used traditional Nepali techniques in paper-making, silk screening and other fields to create new designs for the handicraft industry during the workshop, the release added.

Professor Conrado, during the workshop, highlighted the export potential of Nepal´s handicraft industry and demonstrated how improved design can improve the handicraft industry´s export potential.

Kathmandu University will be incorporating industrial design elements into its art curriculum and is planning industrial design workshops and certificate programs in the future, the release said.
