Nepal is travellers' first choice in Asia for upcoming destinations

Nepal has been voted as travellers' first choice in Asia for upcoming destinations and third choice globally.

TRAVEL website TripAdvisor on December 3, 2013 disclosed the winners of its 2013 Travellers' Choice Awards for Destinations on the Rise. Trip Advisor, an international travel site, revealed the top ten winners of its Travelers Choice 2013. The list is based on reviews and votes of travelers. The destinations on rise category rates the places that have seen the biggest increase in positive reviews from travelers on the site over the past year.  Kathmandu is mystical and magical place, a trove of ancient structures that are enveloped in folklore, Trip Advisor describes the city. The site claims to have over 260 million unique visitors monthly and operates in 34 countries, including China.

Kathmandu is the only destination to make it to the list from south Asia. Other destinations from Asia include Isreal, Japan and Vietnam. Kathmandu has also been named the best backpack destination by Australian travelers in the site.

Highlighting 54 spots globally based on the consolidated reviews and opinions of TripAdvisor travellers, topping the list for Asia is Kathmandu in Nepal, and for the world, Havana in Cuba.

The top 10 Asian destinations are:

  1. Kathmandu, Nepal
  2. Sapporo, Japan
  3. Hanoi, Vietnam
  4. Siem Reap, Cambodia
  5. Hua Hin, Thailand
  6. Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
  7. Sanur, Indonesia
  8. Macau, China
  9. Jaipur, India
  10. Busan, South Korea


 The top 10 destinations in the world, which includes three Asian desitnations, are:

  1. Havana, Cuba
  2. La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica
  3. Kathmandu, Nepal
  4. Jerusalem, Israel
  5. Crusco, Peru
  6. Ambergris Caye, Belize
  7. Sapporo, Japan

Thai Airways celebrates 46th anniversary in Nepal

Thai Airways on Wednesday celebrated its 46 years of service in Nepal.

Thai Airways has been operating in Nepal since 1968.

New Goma Air Plane Lands in Kathmandu

A two-engine aircraft bought by Goma Air landed at the Tribhuwan International Airport on Thursday. The 19-seated short-range L 410 UVP-E20 arrived for test flights for service to remote areas of Nepal.

Issuing a statement on Thursday, Goma Air said the aircraft, made by the Czech aircraft maker LET, will make test flight on the Kathmandu-Jomsom and Kathmandu-Lukla routes in the presence of officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.

Clarks Group to manage Fulbari Resort for 10 years

The Fulbari Resort and Spa has signed management contract with Clarks Group of Hotel, India.

As per the contract, the Indian hospitality group will look after the overall operations, management and marketing of the deluxe resort for 10 years starting January 1.

Clarks Group of Hotel will re-brand the resort as ´The Fulbari Resort &Spa- Member of Clarks Collection´.

“We have collaborated with the group with an objective to provide top class international services in Pokhara,” Amatya said.

Established in 1948, Clarks is one of the fastest growing hotel chains in the world with over 40 hotels in its network.

According to the resort, the collaboration between Fulbari and Clarks provides Pokhara the opportunity to directly tap upmarket holiday-makers from India´s industrial hubs and upmarket international tourists visiting India and extending their trips to Nepal.

“I was searching for the best group that could take the resort into international heights. With this alliance, I am hopeful that the group will enhance Fulbari´s presentation in the global market as most of the tour operators of Europe and the United States are familiar with Clarks,” said Amatya.

Issuing a statement, the resort claimed that the collaboration of Fulbari and Clarks marks the first entry of an international hotel chain into the Nepali market since the end of conflict in Nepal and it is the first of its kind in Pokhara.

“High-end tourists rarely come to Fulbari. But with this tie-up, upmarket groups will be assured of the service and the standard we provide. We will mainly be targeting Indian diplomats, businessmen and Meetings, Incentive, Conference and Events (MICE) groups,” said Amatya. “The depreciation of Indian currency has made other destinations expensive for Indian MICE groups. We can promote Pokhara as the destination for such groups.”

According to Amatya, the group will add facilities and renovate the hotel once they take over the management and marketing.

Staff of Pokhara hotels, eateries to be trained on food safety

 The Department of Commerce and Supply Management (DoCSM) in coordination with International Finance Cooperation (IFC), a member of World Bank Group, and Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DoFTQC) is all set to launch training on food safety and quality maintenance for hotels and restaurants in Pokhara.

Hari Narayan Belbase, director at DoCSM, said a 14-member team left for Pokhara on Monday to study food safety measures adopted by hotels and restaurants there. The team will provide hoteliers and restaurateurs necessary trainings and suggestions based on the outcomes of the study.

“Food experts from the United Kingdom and representatives from IFC are in the team,” Belbase said. “In the first phase, the team will observe food safety situation in hotels and restaurants in Pokhara. Trainings will be conducted in the second phase.”

According to Belbase, trainings will be conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He further added that the team will look into the minimum standards applied by the hotels and eateries to maintain food quality. “Issues related to food safety and quality have remained a major problem in Nepali hospitality sector. We hope the training will make hospitality entrepreneurs more conscious on minimum standards to be maintained,” he added.

Meanwhile, experts in the team will also provide necessary suggestions for food inspection to Nepali market inspectors.

“Nepali hospitality sector has to focus on quality service as the country holds great potential for tourism development,” an IFC representative included in the team said.

He further said tourists´ spending in a country depends on the quality in food they are served. “The visit will provide us the opportunity to conduct comparative study of food quality in European countries and eateries in Nepal,” he added.

 “Monitoring and taking action against the wrongdoers is the only way to maintain quality in service.”

IFC plans to make public the findings of study conducted in Pokhara by holding a press meet in Kathmandu on Friday.
